Looking for some extra storage around your house? Thinking of putting a portable shipping container in your backyard? You might have to look for a different solution, portable shipping containers may not be used for permanent storage or as a garage. Since 2013 Currituck County only allows portable shipping containers to be used as a temporary storage unit with the following specifications:

  • Containers may not exceed 160 square feet in size or be taller than eight feet
  • Storage containers shall not be in place for no more than 30 days per calendar year, and no more than 3 occurrences per parcel, per year.
  • A storage container placed on a construction site shall be removed upon expiration of building permit.
