The 4-H Equine Science program consists of classes, workshops and field trips for kids ages 8 to18 who want to learn more about horses, gain experience and knowledge for judging and horse bowl contests and explore career opportunities in the horse industry.  These interactive educational sessions will provide participants the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and skills on every aspect of the horse industry. We will explore the horse from the inside out and learn about the industry itself with particular emphasis on career opportunities.

These classes will also highlight and help prepare youth for the upcoming horse bowl competition that will be held in Martin County on Saturday, February 12, 2022. Horse Bowl is a competition to test your knowledge of horses in a quiz bowl format.

Each class will have an educational piece on horses and then we will break into teams for horse bowl practice.  Program will consist of educational classes, hands-on activities,  guest speakers such as vets and farriers, and field trips to equine facilities in the area.

These Saturday sessions in this series are:

  • January 14, 2022 – Tack and Riding Styles/Horse Bowl Practice
  • January 28, 2022 –  Veterinarian Care/Horse Bowl Practice
  • February 11, 2022 – Final Horse Bowl Practice for February 12, 2022
  • February 25, 2022 – Horse Diseases/Horse Bowl Practice
  • March 25, 2022 – Expense of Owning a Horse

All classes are from 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. and will be held at the Currituck County Rural Center (CCRC) classroom (white barn across from the  playground).
