July at the Senior Centers

Currituck Senior's ExercisingThe Currituck County Senior Centers; Barco, Knotts Island and Powell's Point are places designed to give Senior Adults in Currituck the opportunity to meet other seniors, receive services geared towards seniors and participate in activities that will affirm their dignity and self-worth.

With that in mind each month the staff produces a newsletter to inform citizens of available programs for that month. Please take the time to read what the Senior Centers are doing this month.

When we all work together the senior centers are an "enjoyable and a happy place" for EVERYONE!

Ready...Set...Go

The Currituck Senior Center's will be CLOSED on Tuesday, July 4, 2017
in observance of Independence Day!

The Currituck County Senior Center will be participating in Operation Fan Heat Relief (OFHR), a summer program intended to provide a more comfortable living environment and reduce heat related illness. In support of OFHR, contributions from Dominion Resources through the Division of Aging and Adult Services were made available to the Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) to purchase fans for individuals in need.

Eligible applicants must reside in Currituck County, must be an adult: 60 years of age or older OR with a disability and must have a home situation where a threat to health and well-being exists. For more information, please contact Stacy Joseph at 252-232-3505.

Connect Currituck Pedestrian Master Plan
Currituck County is developing a Pedestrian Master Plan and wants to hear from you! The plan aims to create better walking conditions and connections in Currituck County and your response to surveys will help build a better understanding of where improvements are needed most. Surveys are available at the Currituck County Senior Centers located in Barco, Powell's Point and Knotts Island. You may also visit Connectcurrituck.com to take the survey.

What is Skin Cancer...

Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells.

It occurs when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations, or genetic defects, that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors.

How Does Clothing Protect Me from the Sun?

Clothing is our first line of defense against the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and protects us by absorbing or blocking much of this radiation. The more skin you cover, the better.

A long-sleeved shirt covers more skin than a t-shirt, especially if it has a high neckline or collar that shields the back of the neck. Likewise, long pants protect more skin than shorts.

As part of a complete sun protection regimen, The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended covering up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.

Light_Bulb_clip_art_medium.gifTammy's "Did You Know"...

241 years ago, 13 colonies declared independence from England. 1776 was the year our country became the United States.

Today we celebrate our independence with cookouts and fireworks. While we are celebrating this year, take a moment to "Thank" those 13 brave colonies. Without them sticking up for us, we wouldn't be the great country that we are today! Happy Independence Day!
