September at the Senior Centers

Currituck Senior's ExercisingThe Currituck County Senior Centers; Barco, Knotts Island and Powell's Point are places designed to give Senior Adults in Currituck the opportunity to meet other seniors, receive services geared towards seniors and participate in activities that will affirm their dignity and self-worth.

With that in mind each month the staff produces a newsletter to inform citizens of available programs for that month. Please take the time to read what the Senior Centers are doing this month.

Coming Up...

 Friday, September 22nd is
National Falls Prevention
Awareness Day!

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

One-forth of Americans aged 65+ falls each year.

Every 11 seconds, an older adult is seen in an emergency department for a fall-related injury; every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall.

Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults.

Falls result in more than 2.8 million injuries treated in emergency depts. Annually, including over 800,000 hospitalizations and more than 27,000 deaths.

Falls, with or without injury, also carry a heavy quality of life impact.

A growing number of older adults fear falling and as a result, limit their activities and social engagements. This can result in further physical decline, depression, social isolation and feelings of helplessness.

6 Steps to Prevent a Fall

  1. Find a good balance and exercise program
  2. Talk to your health care provider
  3. Regularly review your medications with your doctor or pharmacist
  4. Get your vision and hearing checked annually and update your eyeglasses
  5. Keep your home safe
  6. Talk to your family members
