Sheriff's Citizens Academy

The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office recently developed and held the first ever Citizen’s Academy during the summer of 2014.  The first class was held at the Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, June 12, 2014. The Academy ran for eight (8) weeks throughout the summer and held the final class on August 14, 2014 where the participants had their graduation ceremony.  Class began at 6:30 p.m. and was usually finished by 9:00 p.m.

This program was put together by Captain Sandy Casey to better inform  the citizens of Currituck County what the Sheriff's Office does and how it operates along with what types of programs the Sheriff's Office provides to the  community

Some of the county residents that had participated in this academy consisted of two (2) retired police officers from Virginia, a current firefighter from Chesapeake, Virginia,  a business owner, a loan officer, a resort rental agent, and a corporate executive.

During the eight (8) week program, 11 citizens from the county toured the facilities of the Sheriff's Office, the Detention Center and the Courthouse.  They also learned about the Uniform Patrol division, Jail, Narcotics Unit, Criminal Investigative Division, SWAT, Volunteer and Community programs, Bailiffs and Court procedures.

In each class, the participants had hands on training with various equipment to include night vision, forward looking infrared devices, robots, digital child ID program, crime scene processing, mock use of force incidents, courtroom procedures, laser radar, K-9 demonstrations and searches just to name a few.

Student Testimonials

As one student said, “I am a retired Police Officer and retired Sheriff’s Deputy with 40 years of experience.   In all of my years as an officer and of the several cGraduation from Sheriff's 2014 Citizens Academyitizens’ academies that I have attended, this was by far the best that I have ever experienced!”

Another student said, “I just wanted to drop you a line and say, Thank You for such a great time last night at the graduation, as well as over the past eight (8) weeks!  It truly was a very rewarding and fun experience….I just can’t believe it went by so quickly.”

Another stated “by the end of the Sheriff’s Office Citizen Academy, I, along with my co-harts, felt we were part of a larger family known as the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office and a friend of the men and women who so proudly wear the shield.  I recommend the citizens academy whole-heartedly.”
