Currituck County Rural Center

The Currituck County Rural Center is located in Currituck County in Powells Point, NC off North Spot Road. The Currituck County Rural Center is maintained for the education, cultural and recreational enrichment of the public and for the benefit of the citizens and visitors of Currituck County.

The greatest possible use thereof is encouraged, subject only to such rules and regulations as will preserve the parks and public areas for purposes for which they are laid out and the enjoyment, convenience and safety of all concerned.

The park is open to visitors seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. until sunset. Start your visit at the Main Office Visitor Center where you will find information, brochures, rules and regulations and a site map. The office and indoor arena is open 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Reservation of the indoor arena for weekend use can be made by calling 252-232-2262 or 252-491-2569 by Wednesday of that week. Our friendly staff will help start your visit by answering questions and providing you with the above mentioned items.

The best part of all is that the park is free to the public and is currently open. There are some fees associated with special programming or events.

Just a reminder, that the park is open to all. You do not need to be a member to utilize the park facilities. The facility can be rented for special events too.

What Is Available At This Park

On the 105 acres, we currently have a 220' x 100' indoor equestrian riding arena, a 300' x 150 outdoor riding arena, a roping arena, two fishing ponds and a 1500' bulkhead giving access to the sound for kayaks and canoes. We have two barns and 6 outer shelters that provide the opportunity for overnight stall rentals for special events. The park as 32 available stalls. And, a big bonus, we allow dogs at the park.

Popular activities and amenities currently available to the public at the park include:

  • Access to the sound for Kayakers/canoes - the facility has a 1500' bulkhead that provides access to the sound for the visitor to enjoy the wide variety of flora and fauna that inhabits the area as well as the ability to enjoy the calm, breath-taking, natural beauty the coastal wetlands offer. You would need to bring your own kayak or canoe. We currently do not have rentals.
  • Our equestrian Indoor and Outdoor Riding Rings are available for use by all citizens and visiting tourists. We have had the opportunity to host a variety of equestrian events in our indoor arena and offer the indoor arena to the public for personal horseback riding. . Trail riding around the park seems to be a popular activity as well.
  • The park is available for private events and activities. A rental fee and user agreement is necessary to reserve the park for a special event. All horse related event promoters must have a certificate of liability in addition to the user agreement.   • For the fishing enthusiast - we offer 2 Stocked Fishing Ponds and a canal where you can keep what you catch provided you follow the rules and regulations set forth by Fish and Wildlife. So, Come on out and spend a leisurely day fishing for the brim, bass or catfish in the ponds or try your luck with the native fish found in the sound.
  • Our park is a Dog Friendly park. You are welcome to bring your K-9 companion to the park. Future plans to include programming associated with canine activities such as a "Bark in the Park" day, a dog agility activities area and possibly a dog show are in the works.
  • Opportunities at this park include horse shows and rodeos, venues as dog & cat shows, summer camps, 4-H events, bike riding, field days, various kinds of clinics and much, much more. There has even been a wedding at the facility. If you are interested in hosting an event or would like to see a particular type of activity, please feel free to contact the Currituck County North Carolina Cooperative Extension office.

What Is Not Available At This Park

  • We do not offer overnight camping for the public. All future RV/Camper sites are to be used in conjunction with a special event promoted and paid with user agreement for park rental. No private site rental available. Currently, overnight camping associated with an event is for self-contained trailers as there are no RV hook-ups at this time.
  • We do not have kayak/canoe rentals.
  • We do not have a picnic pavilion at this time, but look forward to adding this commodity in the future.
  • We do not have a playground for toddlers.
