Q. How can I find out what my property is zoned?
A. You may contact the Planning Department at 252-232-6026 to inquire about the current zoning of your property and what uses are allowed in that zoning district.
Q. What do I have to do to have my property rezoned?
A. A completed rezoning application must be submitted to the Planning Department no later than 45 days prior to the Planning Board meeting on which you wish to be heard. The Planning Board will review your application and make a recommendation for approval or denial. This recommendation will be forwarded to the Board of Commissioners who will make the final decision on whether to approve the rezoning.
Q. How long will it take to have my property rezoned?
A. The rezoning process generally takes around 3 months. However, the process can take longer depending on when the application is received and if additional information is required by the Planning Board or Board of Commissioners, etc.
Q. What is conditional zoning?
A. Conditional zoning is a type of rezoning in which a property owner proposes use restrictions or conditions to make the proposed request compatibile with the surrounding area and consistant with the county's adopted plans. Conditions should relate to the proposed use or surrounding property such as type of use, density, dimensional requirements, signage, landscaping and buffering, parking, or other design elements.
