Marriage License -  Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the date range of marriage records available at the Register of Deeds office?
A. Records dating from 1850 to today are available.

Q. How much does a marriage license cost?
A. A marriage license costs $60.00. This fee is only payable by cash, certified check, or money order. The Register of Deeds office is not able to accept credit cards.

Q. Can we apply for a marriage license in Currituck County and get married in a different county in the state?
A. Yes. The marriage ceremony can be performed in any county in North Carolina.

Q. Is a premarital physical required?
A. No. Physical examinations are no longer required for marriage.

Q. How long is the license valid?
A. A marriage is valid as soon as it is issued and remains valid for sixty (60) days from the date of issue.

Q. What are the requirements to obtain a marriage license?
A. If you are under the age of 18:

  • Both parties must personally appear at the Register of Deeds office.
  • Both parties must present a certified birth certificate.
  • Both parties must present a valid government picture ID card (driver's license, passport, etc.) that includes date of birth information.
  • A parent or legal guardian must be present and present legal documentation to prove they are the parent or legal guardian. You may be required to produce a certified copy of court orders.
  • A valid Social Security Number is required or an affidavit which indicates that you are not eligible for a

Q. Can we apply for a marriage license after the marriage ceremony has taken place?
A. No. A marriage ceremony cannot take place unless a valid marriage license has been issued.

Q. Who can perform a marriage ceremony?
A. Any ordained minister with a church can perform a marriage ceremony. The officiant does not need a special license to perform a ceremony in North Carolina. Magistrates can also perform marriage ceremonies. You can reach a Currituck County magistrate by calling 252-232-6219.
