Economic Development

The goal of the Economic Development Department is to help strengthen and diversify the County's economy and to encourage job growth. The Department accomplishes this goal by recruiting new industries, helping existing businesses in the County to expand, and working to improve the County's business climate. 

Main Objectives

  • Promote the general economic development of the County consistent with the philosophy of economic growth adopted by the Board of Commissioners
  • Provide a variety of economic and other information to businesses interested in locating in Currituck County
  • Promote business retention and expansion as well as industrial recruitment
  • Work with business clients to secure County and State incentives
  • Work with landowners, developers, and utilities in assisting in the preparation and marketing of industrial sites, buildings, and bisuness parks
  • Works with the Travel and Tourism Department to promote tourism-related business expansion and other joint efforts

Q. How do I obtain a business license?
A. Currituck County does not require business or privilege licenses; however, the County does require that businesses comply with State license requirements, which include registering a trade name.  Please check with the NC Department of Revenue for business licensing and the Currituck County Register of Deeds to register a trade name. 

Q. What County department handles zoning and building permits for businesses?

A. The County Planning Department can tell you if your property is zoned properly for the business you have in mind. The County Inspections Department is responsible for issuing building permits.
