The Currituck County Board of Commissioners are seeking citizens who are willing to serve their community through participation on County advisory boards. Currituck County residents who are at least 18 years of age may apply. Applications can be obtained through the County Manager's office at 252-232-2075 or online.

ABC Board

The Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) Board manages the ABC Stores in Currituck County under state guidance and statute. A five-member board is appointed by the Board of Commissioners.

Agricultural Advisory Board


This is a five member board, formed in 2001, four of whom must be actively engaged in farming, created to implement the Voluntary Agricultural Protection District Ordinance, to investigate and advise on farmland preservation. This board hears requests for applications to be accepted into the farmland preservation program.

Airport Advisory Board


The board advises the Board of Commissioners relative to the regulation construction, enlargement, improvement, maintenance, equipment and operation of the Currituck County Airport. It consists of seven members who are citizens of the county; one member of the board of commissioners, ex officio; and the airport manager, ex officio.

Board of Adjustment

This board hears and acts on appeals, variances, and special uses in Currituck County zoning cases. It consists of seven members - five regular members (one from each district and two at-large) and two alternates.

Economic Development Board

This board advises the Board of Commissioners on economic development issues and assists in implementing county-wide economic development strategies.

Members of the economic development board shall be residents of the county who are interested in the promotion and encouragement of the county's economic development. Members shall be as follows: Seven who shall at the time of appointment be actively connected with and have experience in economic development, or agriculture, business, or industry;
plus three ex officio members - one member of the board of commissioners; the president of the chamber of commerce; and the county's economic development director.

Fire & EMS Advisory Board

This board was formed in early 2008 by the Board of Commissioners to better plan for Fire and EMS Services in the County.

The ten (10) member board will assist the six non-profit volunteer fire departments and the County Department of Fire-EMS with strategic planning, budgeting, bulk purchasing, equipment standardization, standard operating procedures, and benefit issues. There are eight voting members and two non-voting members. Of the eight voting members five are not affiliated with the Volunteer Fire Departments; three are representatives for the fire departments. The eight voting members serve two year terms that are staggered. The two non-voting positions are representatives from the department of Fire-EMS and a Board of Commissioner.

Game Commission

This commission, acting with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, shall have charge of the enforcement of migratory wild fowl game laws and shall have power and authority to prescribe rules and regulations for the enforcement of such game laws and the protection of wild fowl life in the county. It consists of seven members (one from each district and two at-large), each of whom shall be thoroughly acquainted with migratory water fowl shooting both ashore and afloat. This commission also issues and renews blind licenses.

Jury Commission

This commission selects the list of trial and grand jurors. It consists of three members, one of which is appointed by the senior regular resident Superior Court Judge, one by the Clerk of Superior Court, and one by the Board of Commissioners.

Land Transfer Tax Appeals Board

This board hears and rules on appeals for taxes incurred through land transfer. It consists of seven members and meets whenever required for appeals.

Local Emergency Planning Committee

The duties and responsibilities of the Currituck County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) shall be to implement the "Emergency Planning and Community Right-To-Know Act of 1986" (EPCRA) and other applicable laws and regulations. The duties and responsibilities of the LEPC shall include the requirement to:
  • Establish rules by which to function and procedures for receiving and processing requests from the public for information.
  • Oversee the development of an emergency plan in accordance with section 303 of EPCRA, including a chemical hazard/risk analysis, emergency response procedures for off-site emergency response personnel and identification of private/public sector resources available to respond to hazardous material emergency and disasters in Currituck County.
  • In conjunction with emergency response agencies, review annually and update as necessary the emergency plan, or more frequently as changed circumstances in the community or at any facility may require.
  • Receive reports and other information from facilities subject to the requirements of EPCRA.
  • Provide public access to information and documents, subject to required limitations, in accordance with EPCRA and established procedures of the LEPC. 

The LEPC consists of members appointed by the North Carolina State Emergency Response Commission (SERC). The members of the committee include representatives from each of the following groups or organizations: elected officials, law enforcement, emergency management, fire service, EMS, public health, local environmental, transportation officials, broadcast and print media, community groups and owner/ operators of facilities subject to the requirements of Title II.

Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee

This committee is appointed to assist and support The Albemarle Commission’s Area Agency on Aging Ombudsman Program. They visit all nursing and adult care homes in the county every three months to help maintain the nursing home and adult care homes resident’s bill of rights. There are five members on this committee.

Planning Board

The Planning Board consists of nine (9) members who are appointed by the Board of Commissioners, including one from each district, two at large, and one mainland alternate and one Outer Banks alternate.

Recreation Advisory Board

This board advises the Recreation Department, the County Manager, and the Board of Commissioners on the parks and recreation needs of county residents. It consists of seven members appointed by the Board of Commissioners, plus an ex officio Commissioner member. The Recreation Director and County Manager are also ex officio members.

Senior Center Advisory Board

This board serves as the liaison between the older adults of the county and county government. It suggests policy and makes recommendations to the board of commissioners on special needs of the senior citizens and the use of the senior centers. It consists of seven members who are citizens of the county, at least fifty-five years of age, plus one ex officio board of commissioners’ member.

Social Services Board

This board establishes local policy for the Department of Social Services. It selects the Director and advises on planning, policy and helps to identify needs in the community. There are five members; two are appointed by the Board of Commissioners, two are appointed by the Social Services Commission and the fifth member is selected by the Social Services board members. They are selected for three-year terms and meet monthly.

Stormwater Advisory Board


The Stormwater Advisory Board was created by Currituck County's Board of Commissioners in June 2007 to preserve water quality and protect residential and agricultural lands from detrimental flooding. The board consists of 5 members. One from each of the watersheds within the county.

The advisory board is charged with the responsibility of investigating, studying, and making recommendations to the Board of Commissioners pertaining to creation, construction, enlargement, improvement, maintenance, equipment, operation and financing of stormwater infrastructure in Currituck County, as well as, making recommendations for new residential and commercial developments as it pertains to localized stormwater.

Tourism Advisory Board

The Tourism Advisory Board consults with and advises the Tourism Development Authority, the County Manager, and the Department of Travel and Tourism in the matters affecting tourism:

(a) the creation of a yearly County marketing plan
(b) the allocation of County occupancy tax
(c) the acceptance of any grant, gift, bequest or donation
(d) construction, equipping, operation, and maintenance of visitor centers;
(e) advise in regard to other tourism facilities, recommend of tourism events

Whalehead Preservation Trust and Currituck Wildlife Museum Board of Trustees

This board is responsible for the restoration and administration of the buildings and grounds on the Whalehead Club property as it carries out the purpose of the Board of Commissioners. It consists of eleven members who have an interest in the preservation and promotion of the property and the community, as well as the willingness to devote their time, effort and expertise in education, environment, and/or County history.

Workforce Development Board

This board was established as a means of enhancing the partnership concept and addressing employment and training problems at the local level. Currituck County has two appointments to the Workforce Development Board which serves the Northeastern Region Workforce Investment Consortium area consisting of the following counties: Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hyde, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington.
